Football is more than just a game; it is also a tool for children to communicate even if they do not speak the same language – it is the language of football. No matter where you are from, which background, rich or poor, anyone can play football and have fun.

Secret football guests at the Childhood Cancer Foundation’s family outing

When the Childhood Cancer Foundation arranged a sport’s themed family outing, MTG United for Peace brought along some secret guests. The event, which took place at at Tyresö Sports Centre in Stockholm on the 21 January, was held for at children recovering from cancer, and their families. The kids had the opportunity to try out a variety of sports, football amongst others, a sport we have special relationship to. Football coach and former top Swedish footballer Bo Petersson was there to help share the joy of football with the children. The two other secret guests who helped him in his quest were football juggling world champion Tomas Lundman and well known goalkeeper Rami Shaaban, who’s had a phenomenal football career overseas and at home in Sweden.

Football stars add magic to final

Football super stars from near and far has gathered at the LSK hall in Lillestrøm, just outside Oslo, on Saturday 8 October to take part in the MTG United for Peace’s celebrity football matches. Along with a few more humble players, who can’t resist the temptation of playing with their heroes.

The happy champions are – Ghana and Sweden!

“Wooow!” The impressed cry comes from the busload of young football players taking part in the United for Peace cup as they gets to the top of the winding road of the mountain in Oslo. The reason for the outburst is the sight of the world famous ski jump arena Holmenkollen, which has recently been completely rebuilt. The magnificent structure, completely made out of steel, is also Norway’s most famous tourist attraction.

Time for reflection

The early bus ride from the hotel turns into a big show in quite a few of the buses as the twelve teams competing in the MTG United for Peace cup take turns to make their voices heard. In the Scandinavian bus the Swedish girls’ voices completely drown all the others when they sing along to their music and dance in the aisle. Finally the whole busload of footballers gives up and decides to join in.

Excitement is in the air

Thursday the 6 October is a day of big excitement. Anticipation fills the air as the young football teams arrive at a sunny Gardermoen airport, just outside Oslo, from their twelve different home countries. They’ve all come to compare strengths and determine who’s going to win the 2011 finals of MTG United for Peace cup here in Norway. But the children are also here to have a great time and to meet new friends from all over the place, over borders and often over language barriers.

Finally, we’re here. It’s time. Time for the final of MTG United for Peace cup. The journey has been long and hard, but filled with fun. The big event for 12-14-year old football mad boys and girls kicks off in Oslo, Norway, the 6-9 October.
