About Flemming Povlsen

As a youngster, Flemming Povlsen (born on 3 December 1966 in Brabrand) played for the local club Viby, like Brabrand a suburb of Aarhus but his talent was so obvious that, unavoidable, he had to move to AGF and, although only 17, he immediately made it to the first team of one of the biggest clubs in Denmark. The following year, he was named Young Player of the Year.

In 1986, Flemming Povlsen was good enough to join the Danish squad for the FIFA World Cup in Mexico but, unfortunately, it was played in June at the same time as the final exams at the high school, so he stayed at home and graduated. One month later, he signed for Castilla CF, the reserve team of Real Madrid CF playing in La Liga 2. After one year in Spain, his career really took off. He went to 1. FC Köln and helped the team, including Morten Olsen, to finish runner-up in the Bundesliga in two consecutive seasons. Then he won the Dutch championship with PSV Eindhoven before returning to Germany to play for BV Borussia Dortmund.
Wherever he played, his speed and work rate made him very popular with the fans. At EURO 92 in Sweden he played all five games for Denmark and broke down in tears of joy after the final whistle when Denmark had beaten Germany 2-0 and won the title. Whenever fit he was a member of the national team from 1987 to 1994, making 21 goals in 62 appearances.

Flemming Povlsen played 187 games in the Bundesliga and scored 39 goals until he was forced to stop his career, following cruciate ligament in one knee in April 1993 and a similar injury in his other knee in September 1995. After his retirement he returned to Denmark to become sports director of FC Aarhus, then the assistant of head coach Kent Nielsen in AC Horsens and later of John Jensen in Randers FC, both former team-mates at EURO 92. Today, he is the assistant coach of Silkeborg IF and a TV commentator.
